Anna Depenbusch
"Echtzeit"
Germany's number one singer-songwriter presents her new album: Echtzeit. It is about real, immediate moments in times of digitalisation, about the question of how her protagonists from ‘Tim liebt Tina’ have fared in the meantime and about the confessions that an analogue real-time recording on vinyl reveals.
Listening for sounds and thoughts
Songwriter: Anna Depenbusch has taken this seemingly old-fashioned term deep into her heart. The artist loves to tell stories, curiosities and incidentals, the fantastic and the dreamy, simple and timeless - the poetry of everyday life. The singing poet created her unmistakable style early on: lyrics that are as tender as they are eloquent, in which she not only lays her soul bare, but which are also a revelation for other souls. Musically, she is somewhere between Edith Piaf, Hildegard Knef and Björk - always in dialogue with her own words. From deeply sad to hilarious. Anna Depenbusch has already written her own history with this very mixture: Five studio albums, two solo albums in ‘black and white’ on the piano. Germany-wide tours from the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg to the Prinzregententheater in Munich. Awards such as the Fred Jay Prize and the German Chanson Prize, two nominations for the German Music Writer's Prize.
There is no end in sight for Anna: ‘There are an infinite number of songs floating around that haven't even been written yet - and when a song has decided in my favour, it finds its way through my feelings and harmonies.’
Life in real time
‘I am particularly touched by fleeting interpersonal relationships. The big feeling in the small moment, the magic of the everyday.’ In her new songs, she sensitively searches for her own truth in personal encounters and seeks direct dialogue. Less digital impatience and immediacy - more real time in the reduced moment. In the light-footed song ‘Tim 2.0’, Anna Depenbusch takes another look at her protagonist from her love story ‘Tim liebt Tina’ after ten years. How has Tim fared in recent years, in times of optimisation mania? We are all constantly supplied with new data and information through our digital devices - what does that do to us? The singer-songwriter herself wants to slow down, take a step back from the pressure that digitalisation puts on her and asks herself: How real-time capable are we actually? And how do I want to spend my life in a fulfilling way in the future? This is how the idea for the new album came about: ‘Musically, I long for real, immediate moments. Just like I experience solo at the piano in my concerts with the audience. So I asked myself the question: how can I get this feeling onto a studio album?’
The analogue Anna-logy
Anna opts for a unique recording technique: analogue vinyl direct recording. Time and place: January in the Emil Berliner Studios, which are specialised and world-renowned for analogue vinyl direct recordings. In other words, a real-time recording in which the album is recorded live and completely analogue in one piece, without editing and without a break. A production process that resembles a unique choreography between building, artist, sound engineer and vinyl cutting room. A process without embellishment, without ifs and buts, a musical moment in real time. Charming irregularities are part of the real-time concept. As soon as the diamond needle plunges into the vinyl and the red recording lamp lights up, there's no turning back. ‘Life is not perfect! I want to show how beautiful that is. Of course, the recording process intimidates me. A mixture of fear, euphoria and adrenaline shoots through my body when I think about it. But that's exactly the challenge.’ And because these small, imperfect moments are what the musician loves most, she wants to share them with a local audience. ‘A selected audience will be part of the recording on the day of recording, as emotional support, just like at my concerts.’
And what does ‘Echtzeit’, the album's opening title track, sound like? ‘I don't know yet! This song position on the album will remain open until then, to leave room for the real moment.’ And so it sounds like a promise when the wilful poet states as she looks ahead: ‘I have the feeling that I have only just arrived in my own time so that I can pour thoughts into songs in an even more exciting way - after all, I see myself as a modern muse who wants to inspire other people to think and feel things in a new way. I will be telling stories all my life.’ Anna Depenbusch finds a contemporary form for her passionate songs. We accompany her, and so the circle closes in real time at the end.
